Each year has a specific theme, and in 2026, the focus is \u201cSafe care for noncommunicable diseases,\u201d explained in more detail below.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The History and Background of World Patient Safety Day<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Patient Safety Day was officially established in 2019, but the international effort to make health care safer began much earlier. According to the latest available WHO data:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 1 in 10 patients experiences harm while receiving health care, and more than half of this harm is preventable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsafe care is associated with more than 3 million deaths each year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In primary and ambulatory care, as many as 4 in 10 patients may experience harm, much of which could be avoided.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patient harm may reduce global economic output by up to 0.7% annually, with indirect costs reaching trillions of US dollars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCDs caused at least 43 million deaths in 2021, accounting for about 75% of non-pandemic-related deaths worldwide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 18 million NCD deaths occurred before age 70, with 82% of these premature deaths in low- and middle-income countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiovascular diseases accounted for at least 19 million NCD deaths, followed by cancers (10 million), chronic respiratory diseases (4 million), and diabetes (more than 2 million, including kidney disease deaths caused by diabetes).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, these figures show the scale of two closely connected challenges: the burden of NCDs and the continuing impact of unsafe care.
